Before covering a basement gym floor, investigate moisture

A new gym floor does not resolve a basement's water problem. Before putting mats, tiles, or equipment over a questionable area, identify why it is damp and what needs to be corrected. Separate room humidity from a wet surface

Record what you can observe without disturbing suspect materials: visible water, condensation, musty odor, prior leaks, and when the condition appears. A damp area after rain suggests a different investigation from condensation on a cold pipe. These observations help explain the problem to a building professional; they do not diagnose the cause by themselves.

EPA recommends keeping indoor relative humidity below 60 percent if possible, ideally between 30 and 50 percent. That is room-air guidance, not a floor manufacturer's moisture acceptance limit. If the floor is visibly wet, there is active leakage, or a moldy odor has no explained source, stop planning how to conceal the area. Resolve the source and drying needs first. A drying deadline is not an installation certificate

EPA advises acting quickly after leaks or spills and says drying wet materials within 24 to 48 hours prevents mold in most cases. Before installation, collect the written substrate requirements for the exact flooring and adhesive, if any. Ask what test is required, who should perform it, and what results are acceptable. Do not substitute an internet moisture threshold from another product.

Know when cleanup needs specialist help

EPA uses roughly 10 square feet as one consideration when deciding who should handle mold cleanup, but area is not the only factor. It calls for professional help with sewage or other contaminated-water damage and additional guidance for extensive water damage or larger mold areas.
